ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
ADHD, or previously ADD, for Attention Deficit Disorder, has had a
variety of labels in its more than 100 year history of scientific study. Other terms for the
disorder are minimal brain damage, minimal brain dysfunction, or MBD, hyperactive child syndrome,
hyperactivity, hyperkinesis, or hyperkinetic disorder of childhood. For more on the history of ADHD,
see Research to Read. Dr. Barkley has spent his entire professional
career in clinical psychology and clinical neuropsychology studying ADHD and its diagnosis, assessment,
and management. Among the treatments he has studied or written about have been the stimulant medications,
such as methylphenidate (brand names of Ritalin ® , Ritalin SR ® , Ritalin LA ®, Focalin ®,
Focalin XR ®, Concerta ®, and Metadate CD ®), the amphetamines (brand names of Adderall ®,
Adderall XR ®, Dexedrine ®), and pemoline (Cylert ®). He has also studied and written about the
non stimulants, such as atomoxetine (brand name Strattera ®). Dr. Barkley has investigated various
psychological, psychiatric, and educational methods for ADHD, such as parent training in behavior management
(often used with defiant children, behavior problem children, or those with oppositional defiant disorder, or ODD),
family therapy or family training in problem-solving and communication skills (often used with teens with conduct
problems, conduct disorder, or CD), classroom behavior modification, social skills training, self-control training,
and special education services for ADHD in the schools. He has also studied adults with ADHD and their treatment.

These include diet or nutrition treatments or diet supplements for ADHD, health food or homeopathy, sensory integration therapy (usually provided under occupational therapy or physical therapy), chiropractic treatment, EEG biofeedback, neurofeedback, or neurotherapy, cognitive or cognitive-behavioral training, or alternative treatments. One of his recent research reviews on EEG and its use in biofeedback appears on this site under Research to Read.
